The Tourism Ministry plans to finalize 100 Instagrammable digital tourism destinations as they target more millennial travelers.

Tourism Minister Arif Yahya said many countries had not yet seriously captured the millennial market, although they made up around 50 percent of all travelers, reported Antara.

Millennials, Arief continued, are known for their habit of uploading breathtaking photos on their Instagram accounts. Therefore, the minister will reexamine tourist attractions or activities that have the potential to be listed as trending topics and attract millennial tourists.

The ministry will improve promotional activities through digital media and a wide digital tourism network to encourage online business and usage of social media in all markets.

In 2016, around 49 percent of travelers in Indonesia were from the millennial generation, those below 35 years old, and the number is expected to increase. Digital tourism is said to be the way to reach the target.

Indonesia welcomed 9.7 million foreign tourists in 2015 and the number increased to 11.5 and 14 million in 2016 and 2017 respectively. In September, the country recorded an 11.81 percent growth in foreign tourists compared to the same period last year.

The ministry predicts it will be able to attract 17 million people by the end of 2018.
“We think it’s possible to achieve a target of 20 million [travelers] in 2019,” Arief said.
